On the morning of 30 June, the Panel on the effects of climate change and older people of the Human Rights Council highlighted some important issues. The data informs that by 2050 there will be 1.5 billion people over 65 and the temperature could rise by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The people who took part in the discussion could not fail to emphasize, on the one hand, the fundamental role of older people in our society, but also how they need to be better protected and safeguarded - just think of the not yet fully concluded experience of the covid-19 pandemic and, on the other hand, how the problem of climate change represents a constant and serious danger for the environment and consequently for human rights. It, therefore, became clear that older people, especially in the poorest countries, may be more exposed to the harmful consequences of global warming. A possible solution discussed is to create a universal minimum standard of protection for the human rights of older people, including in the context of climate change.
