A disturbing video game, “No Mercy”, has sparked global outrage and condemnation for promoting sexual violence against women and misogyny.
Steam, one of the largest video game platforms, has a ‘game’ available that encourages the sexual violence and rape of women. The ‘video game’, “No Mercy”, which has the motto ‘become a woman’s worst nightmare’, has generated controversies in multiple countries. While some have already abolished it, many countries allow for this violence to continue to be perpetuated. In the United States, the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation has strongly condemned and urged the platform to remove it, as it “promotes graphic sexual violence, incest, blackmail and male domination by explicitly encouraging players to engage in non-consensual acts and misogynistic behaviour” (Notícias ao Minuto, 2025). Many organisations have condemned it and urged its removal, such as the non-profit organisation “Women in Games”, considering it unacceptable to be online.
One should remember that Steam has been previously involved in similar controversies, such as in the case of the game “Rape Day”, which they were forced to remove in 2019 as it promoted the harassment, rape, and killing of women.
