Actress and former Miss Earth Bangladesh winner Meghna Alam was detained for posing a threat to public safety, law, and order.

A court ordered Meghna Alam to be imprisoned for thirty days over allegations of risking public safety under the Special Powers Act of 1974 which allows the government to detain individuals without a trial or formal charges. Previously, rumours were circulating that Alam was abducted, but the Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed that they had her in custody under charges of hampering diplomatic relationships and threatening to cause economic loss to the country by spreading lies (TBS Report, 2025). Police and foreign ministry officials are investigating allegations of blackmailing several diplomats against Alam following a Facebook post claiming that a foreign diplomat was influencing the police to pick up people around her and threatening her (TBS Report, 2025). The Facebook post has since been taken down. Sources claim that Alam was presented before a court by Detective Branch (DB) police, who approved the request and ordered her detention (Dhaka Tribune, 2025).

Alam’s detainment has called for concerns from human rights organisations and media outlets. She is an actress, environmental advocate, and the 2020 winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh. The incident was captured on a Facebook live on April 9th, which shows Alam alleging that law enforcement broke into her home (TBS Report, 2025). The Facebook broadcast lasted twelve minutes and was later deleted. Alam is being detained in the Kashimpur Central Jail.
