For the first time Roma recognized as ethnicity by UK census

UK census is a nation-wide survey that all households in England and Whales are obliged to take every ten years. For the first time in history, a Roma tick-box is included as an option under the White ethnicity category. This is a significant step for the estimated 200 000 Roma population of the UK to have their unique needs recognized and accounted for by policymakers.

The Roma community is one of the most severely marginalized groups in the UK. Life expectancy among the Gypsy, Roma and Travelers is 10 years lower than than that of the general population and Roma face struggles at the job market, with housing, healthcare and education. In light of past discrimination, many in the UK Roma community are reluctant to identify themselves as Roma in the survey due to fears of negative consequences. The campaigners urge the community to correctly identify themselves in the survey through educational campaigns in order to boost Roma representation and get their needs heard.
