Extreme Daunting Situation for Hindus in Bangladesh: No One Left to Save Them

0

January 2024:   Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina secured her fourth consecutive term in elections marred by opposition boycotts and widespread allegations of corruption. The ruling Awami League (AL) faced accusations of receiving support from Indian political forces. Amid rising prices of daily goods and increasing corruption, students began protesting against government job quotas.

July 2024:   Student-led protests erupted against job quotas favoring descendants of the 1971 independence fighters, with students from both public and private universities taking to the streets. Sheikh Hasina’s dismissive response only heightened public discontent. The situation escalated when the AL general secretary ordered an attack on the protesters, sparking further unrest. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami seized the opportunity to attempt a government overthrow, amid claims of external interference.

July 29, 2024:   Students, the general public, BNP, and Jamaat united in demanding Hasina’s resignation.

August 4, 2024:   Violent clashes resulted in nearly 103 deaths, raising the total death toll to almost 300 since the protests began.

August 5, 2024:   At 1:45 PM, army chief Waker Uz Zsman issued an ultimatum to Hasina, giving her 45 minutes to resign and leave the country. By 2:30 PM, Hasina fled to Agartola, and then to Delhi, India, accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehena. Protesters stormed the Prime Minister’s residence, Parliament, and MPs’ properties, looting and setting fires. Tragically, innocent Hindus were targeted in the violence, with their homes and businesses under attack. Police stations across the country, including those in Dhaka, were also assaulted, leaving many abandoned.

The entire nation descended into chaos, with neither the public nor the police feeling safe. On the night of August 5, mobs attacked and killed police officers in 27 districts, bringing the official death toll to 460, including over 200 students. A police officer reported that at least 50 police personnel had lost their lives due to public outrage since Monday afternoon. The rapidly deteriorating situation made it difficult to determine the exact number of casualties.

August 6, 2024:   Fanatic groups intensified their attacks on Hindus, resorting to brutal tactics such as checking individuals’ underwear to identify their religion, targeting Hindus for violence. Incidents were reported in various police stations across Dhaka, including Jatrabari, Badda, Vatara, Mohammadpur, Adabor, Mirpur, Paltan, Shah Ali, and Uttara East.
