European Union addresses human rights violations in Sri Lanka

In a speech directed at the government of Sri Lanka, a spokesperson for the European Parliament addressed the unacceptable oppression and human rights violations occurring in Sri Lanka. They brought attention to the fundamental freedoms that the Tamils, an ethnic minority native to Sri Lanka, have been deprived of for years. The EU condemns this oppression, which stemmed from civil war, and urged the country to allow UN access to investigate the war crimes that were committed. In this briefing, justice is called for the perpetrators of this genocide that has killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians. The EU hopes to send a clear message to Sri Lanka, and the entire international community, that these grave violations of human rights for the Tamils must be put to a end immediately.
