On 06 July 2021, the European Court of Human Rights convicted the State of Russia for disrespecting gender equality in the case of Gruba and Others v. Russia. The case concerned four male police officers who had an unjustified different treatment by the Russian authorities regarding their request for parental leave. Between 2009 and 2012, all the four applicants had their requests rejected, essentially because such leave could only be granted to a policeman if his child had been left without the care of a mother. The two male applicants stopped working because they understood they were entitled to parental leave, which made them lost their jobs a few days later, and a third applicant was dismissed due to health problems. Although they challenged the refusals in the domestic courts, they did not have success. In addition, the authorities claimed that there was no evidence that the wives of two of the applicants, who had been diagnosed with health problems and had been advised not to carry anything heavier than 5 kg, could not care for their children. The cases arrived at the ECHR, which held that the State of Russia violated Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) jointly with Article 8 (right to respect for private and family life) of the European Convention on Human Rights for all four applications.
