Erdogan quits European treaty on violence against women - Turkey

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan withdrew the European treaty on violence against women, without giving a motivation of this decision and despite last year’s increase in domestic violence. The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policies of Turkey, Zehra Zumrut, claimed that Turkish judicial system is strong enough to implement the regulation which they need.

The decision split the State: the conservative wing of the country supports the choice, since the fear which could increase the number of violence and could lead to gender equality. The latter one is a debated issue, because it could be seen as an attempt of promoting homosexuality, which is against the Constitution for the principle of non-discrimination for sexual orientation. Otherwise, others protest against this decision and they see it as a new step to put Turkey further away from European Union.
