Today, on the 1st of April 2022, the Conference of Ministers of Culture will take place in Strasbourg and online. This Conference has been organised within the framework of the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers. Participants of the Conference will include but is not limited to Dario Franceschini, Italian Minister of Culture, Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Oleksandr Tkachenko, the Ukrainian Minister of Culture.

The overall objective of the Conference is to “examine in depth the challenges and opportunities of digital technologies for European cultural policy, cultural heritage standards and audio-visual practices”. The Council of Europe believes that cultural heritage and creativity can enable us to combat the challenges we face in a 21st century society. More specifically, it states that:

“Culture, creativity and cultural heritage are strategic resources used to shape a diverse and democratic Europe. Culture is a motor for political, social and technological changes but is also directly impacted by today’s global challenges. Culture and creativity, cultural heritage and landscape lend the way to freedom of expression (on and offline), supporting artificial intelligence developments, empowering civil society, encouraging public debate and providing an education platform for democratic citizenship”.

The importance of this Conference is seen through the ongoing destruction of Ukraine’s cultural heritage by the Russian Federation and the impact this will have on its future generations. For those who wish to follow the Conference, press on this link to have access to a live broadcast.
