Following the detention of President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane on May 24th, 2021, Colonel Assimi Goïta declared himself the interim president of Mali, on May 26th, 2021. The following day, May 27th, 2021, President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane were released, and both resigned. Mali’s constitutional court named Colonel Assimi Goïta as the transitional president on Friday, May 28th, 2021. Colonel Goïta has served as Mali’s vice president in the transitional government formed last September, despite pressure from the international community for a civilian-led transition.
