On International Women’s Day, a college student was allegedly gang-raped at Guliakhali Beach in Sitakunda, Chittagong. While police have made an arrest, conflicting statements from authorities have fueled public outrage and demands for justice.
On March 8th, a college student was allegedly gang-raped at Guliakhali Beach in Sitakunda, Chittagong, coinciding with International Women’s Day. According to reports, the victim had gone to the beach with a friend when they were confronted by four men. The attackers reportedly assaulted her companion before dragging the victim into a nearby forest, where the crime was committed.
Locals discovered the victim and alerted the authorities. Law enforcement officials launched an investigation; however, Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mujibur Rahman, stated the victim wasn’t raped. “The girl’s brother and friend who were with her screamed for help, the attacker fled”, he said. When asked about the injuries on her face, he claimed that legal action would be taken following a medical examination.
The ongoing investigation has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect, Md Rakib, from the Guliyakhali area of Muradpur Union.
The incident has sparked nationwide protests, with calls for stricter law enforcement and enhanced safety measures in public spaces. Advocacy groups have condemned the attack, emphasising the need for urgent action to address violence against women.
