Canada has officially released a travel warning as of 11/04/2021 where travelers, especially those of minority backgrounds, are at considerable risk for “arbitrary detention without due process” when traversing through the Xinjiang region of China, according to CTV News and Radio Canada International. Foreign journalists have even been intimidated and detained for reporting on these practices and demonstrations. Uyghur refugees have described these internment camps where torture, brainwashing, and rape are common experiences for Muslims who are detained in Xinjiang. In March, Several Western countries imposed sanctions on China for its human rights abuse–with the detainment of 1.8 million Muslims in these internment camps being compared to a “Nazi genocide”, but China responded back condemning these countries for their sanctions, given their own histories of human rights violations. Chinese officials stated that they have “raised this issue directly with Chinese authorities on a number of occasions, both bilaterally and in multilateral forums and [that they] will continue to do so at every possible opportunity,” yet not much progress has been made.
