Bolsonaro consolidates Amazon as a focus of agrarian violence in Brazil, points the Pastoral Commission of Land (CPT)
According to the latest report published by the Pastoral Commission of Land (CPT), 2020 broke the record for conflicts in the countryside with 2,054 cases registered.Of which 77% of the cases where in the areas of the states of the North region, Mato Grosso, and Maranhão (Legal Amazon), an increase of 8% compared to 2019. Only in 2020, eighteen people, including seven indigenous people, died as a result of conflicts. During the first two years of Jair Bolsonaro's campaign, the number of disputes in the countryside whose aggressor was the government itself exploded, reaching a number seven times higher than practiced in the former administration.
