Asian community in Malawi aggrieved by extreme aggression of the Immigration Department of Malawi

0

The Asian Association of Maravi (AAM) has called the actions of the Immigration Department (ID) ‘unconstitutional’ when the ID conducted a door-to-door sweep to capture illegal immigrants in Area 2 of Lilongwe on 9 May 2021. AAM Chairperson, Rafiq Hajat, stated that the sweep was unconstitutional as the ID officers allegedly refused to show their identity papers. The sweep, moreover, was conducted at 1 AM, with immigration officers, policemen and soldiers equipped with large hammers and crowbars, with the intention of forcing their entrance to the homes if it were not opened quickly. The attitude of the officers was allegedly extremely aggressive, and they lacked any consideration for the rights of the residents or any sensitivity to their cultural or religious norms, according AAM. Although AAM fully supports the government’s fight against illegal immigration, the way of conducting such sweeps should still adhere to the constitution and should still respect human rights.
