The Lao Authorities have recently seized more than 2000 kilogrammes of methamphetamine. The incident is part of a broader and complex battle against drug trafficking in the country.
Laos’ ongoing fight against the drug trade reveals a complex and difficult problem. On April 21st, 2025, more than 20 million methamphetamine pills were seized by the authorities in Bokeo Province after the police spotted a suspicious truck whose driver ignored the police’s directives. The vehicle was later found abandoned and contained more than 2000 kilogrammes of methamphetamine. To this day, no suspect has been arrested, however the authorities launched an investigation to identify and take legal action against those participating in drug trades.
This recent incident is not an exception, rather it is part of a broader drug issue in the country. In its capital alone, 27 drug-related cases were reported since the beginning of the year. Moreover, in 2024, Laos recorded more than 3000 drug-related cases, totalling over 5000 arrests.
As part of the “Golden Triangle”, a thriving narcotics economy, also including parts of Burma, China, and Thailand, Laos’ combat against drug trade is difficult. In this triangle, cannabis, heroin, kratom, methamphetamine, and opium are most commonly trafficked.
Tackling the issue requires various forms of efforts, thus Laos authorities have created several awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of drug consumption. It is also part of a broader international battle in cooperation with Thailand and Myanmar to combat cross-border trafficking.
