After Afghanistan, doubt and fear hang over Iraq
After the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, it is now the turn of the Iraqis to fear the departure of American forces from their countries . In July, US President Biden met with Iraqi Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi. They agreed that US troops would stop their combat mission in Iraq by the 31 of December. The forces will be maintained to assist and train Iraqi security forces, that is their core mission since the end of the war against ISIS in 2017.
Joe Biden's main objective is to disengage the US from conflicts in the Middle East, and Iraq is in the crosshairs. Many Iraqis worry about a new resurgence of the Islamic State or a takeover by Shiite militias if the US forces leave the country.

En dépit de ses faiblesses, Bagdad dispose d’institutions robustes et de forces armées formées.
