In recent news, a significant fire incident has once again underscored the pressing issue of fire safety in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. On September 14, a massive fire engulfed several hundred shops in the bustling Mohammadpur market, causing extensive damage and economic loss [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023; Wion, 14 September 2023].

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, took a formidable six hours for military forces and firefighters to control [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023; Wion, 14 September 2023]. Thankfully, no casualties were reported as the fire occurred before the stores opened for business [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023]. It is estimated that the rapid spread of the blaze was exacerbated by the abundance of flammable items within the market, including cooking oil and plastics [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023]. This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the recurring fire-related challenges that densely populated Dhaka faces [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023].

Fire safety in Dhaka has been a recurrent concern, particularly as the city has experienced a building boom without adequate safety measures [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023]. The absence of stringent regulations and proper enforcement has often led to devastating fires and explosions, commonly attributed to faulty gas cylinders, air conditioners, and substandard electrical wiring [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023]. These incidents have not only resulted in economic losses but also raised questions about the protection of basic human rights, including the right to safety and security [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023].

Such events highlight the urgent need for Dhaka's authorities to prioritize fire safety regulations and enforcement. Additionally, public awareness and education on fire prevention and safety measures must be enhanced to mitigate the risks associated with these disasters [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023].

In conclusion, the recent fire incident in Dhaka's Mohammadpur market serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges related to fire safety in the city. It is imperative that concerted efforts are made to address this issue comprehensively, focusing on regulatory improvements, enhanced safety measures, and public education. Doing so not only safeguards economic interests but also upholds the fundamental human rights of safety and security for the citizens of Dhaka [Aljzeera, 14 September 2023; Reuters, 14 September 2023; Asia, 14 September 2023].
