A Rohingya Refugee Dies due to COVID-19 in Indonesia

A Rohingya Refugee, Eshak Mohammad, sixty-four (64), died in Medan, North Sumatra, after being rushed to the hospital with severe symptoms of COVID-19. He had been receiving treatments for two days, since the 30th of July 2021 in University of North Sumatra (USU) hospital. 

He was the first Rohingya refugee in Indonesia to die from COVID-19 since the pandemic started, having spent the last nine years of his life in the Hotel Pelangi Shelter in Medan, North Sumatra.

Muhammad Zeinizen, the University of North Sumatra hospital’ offical had confirmed the death of Eshak Mohammad due to COVID-19 on Sunday, 1st of August 2021. However, he refused to comment further. 

entius Purwo Hendratmoko, the head of the Medan Immigration detention center, announced Eshak's body had been buried at a local cemetery in Simalingkar, Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
