Although Saudi Arabia assured that it had abolished the death penalty for minors, the Saudi citizen Mustafa Hashem al-Darwish was executed. He was 17 years old when he allegedly formed a terror cell and tried to carry out an armed revolt, which he all denied. Rights groups like Amnesty International protested against the death penalty, also because Saudi Arabia stated last year not to conduct death penalties for crimes committed while the people were minors.
