On April 10th, 2025, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal requested Interpol for red notices against officials of the previous Awami League government. However, the effectiveness of the red notices has not been satisfactory.
On April 10th, 2025, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) again requested the home ministry to request Interpol for red notices against officials of the previous Awami League (AL) government, including nine ministers and an adviser, including AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and AL Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
According to the Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, these individuals faced multiple charges related to crimes against humanity and genocide allegedly committed in the July 2024 uprising. Additionally, this is not the first time the ICT prosecution has asked for red notices. Tracing back to November 2024, Tajul Islam also requested a red notice to arrest Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who allegedly committed mass killings under genocide and crimes against humanity and absconded to India after July 2024.
The absconding facts of these individuals impacted the proceedings of further procedures in the ICT and catalysed the request of red notices from the Interpol, a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
However, as announced by Interpol, the red notices do not inherently impose a mandatory obligation on the states or compel the states to arrest and extradite the individuals, but only remain arbitrary for member states to decide whether to act on a red notice based on their domestic laws (Interpol, n.d.). Moreover, Interpol has not issued any red notices based on the request of the prosecution of the ICT. Apart from requesting red notices, the ICT has also issued warrants for 141 individuals involved in the July uprising.
