At the age of 20, Gilmar Tupã re sapy Chamrro was the first Avá Guarani1 of the family to enter a Higher Education. In 2019, the Federal University of Latin American Integration (Unila) put out to press a public note approving a new application method for all the indigenous population. The new method bases the applicant’s acceptance on the evaluation of the academic record and not on a college-specific common entrance exam (Stentzler, 2021). It is estimated that this initiative should allow the university to have 200 students annually from indigenous communities. The rule is applicable for both Brazilian and foreign indigenous people who live in other countries on the continent (Stentzler, 2021).
