On 9th July 2021, the IACHR pronounced itself on the assassination of the president of Haiti, Mr Jovenel Moïse during an attack by an armed group on his private residence in Port-au-Prince in the early hours of July 7. The commission stressed that this crime is part of a widespread and exponential atmosphere of violence and insecurity in the country that has been taking place due to the weaknesses of the public institutions and the unfriendly political disputes, resulting in complex violations of human rights of the population. In this sense, the IACHR urged the State of Haiti to guarantee that the population enjoys effective democratic institutions, citizen security, human rights, and full respect for the principles and rules of the constitutional and democratic framework. Lastly, the IACHR requested the authorities investigate all human rights violations that have occurred in the context of the current wave of political and institutional tensions, and clarify, as well as adopt measures to ensure these events are not repeated.
